Because it controls the jaw, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is often overlooked and overworked. It’s easy to take this small but vital joint for granted, until something happens to move it out of alignment. You can experience painful symptoms, but our TMJ treatment in Buffalo can provide relief.Dr. James Lesinski on TMJ Disorder Read Transcript
TMJ pain, also referred to as TMD, along with bruxism and grinding of teeth, a lot of these now are associated with the underdevelopment of the maxilla and the mandible. What happens is this: If you think about it, our maxilla, our upper jaw, is the garage. Our lower jaw is the car. It will park wherever that garage is. So if our maxilla is underdeveloped, it will be retruded back into our head. Our jaw has to pull back to get in there.
This puts pressure on our TMJ joint. We have found that this causes a lot of the pain and discomfort associated with a TMJ case. This also, we know, causes airway issues, snoring, sleep apnea, and it can also be involved with causing cervical neck problems, C1, 2, and 3.
So what we're using right now is what's called the Vivos system. That's a way of expanding the maxilla, growing it forward. This is revolutionary. It was never thought before that an adult person could grow a bone after puberty. But in fact, science has shown that we can do this. We can grow this maxilla, we can pull the jaw forward. We can take the pressure off the TMJ, we can open up the airway through pneumopedics, actually remodeling the airway and taking the pressure off the spine. This also is done in association with many different medical professionals, from ENTs – ear, nose and throat doctors – chiropractors, myofunctional therapists, pediatricians, allergists, and many more medical professionals. We can do all this in working together to help relieve these TMJ problems.

Alignment problems in your jaw joint are closely related to a habit known as bruxism. This is when you clench your jaw and grind your teeth, often unintentionally as a response to stressful situations or while you’re asleep. Not only does this behavior put excess strain on your TMJ, but it can also result in damaged, worn teeth that put your oral health at risk.
You can avoid these problems with our noninvasive solutions for bruxism and TMJ disorder at Complete Health Dentistry of WNY. We can create a custom mouthguard for you to wear that will:
- Keep your upper and lower teeth from touching
- Alleviate the stress on your jaw
- End your painful symptoms
- Give your TMJ the chance to heal
- Protect the health and appearance of your smile
Our dentists have even uncovered sleep apnea as an underlying issue with patients complaining of jaw pain. We team up with a lab partner and a trusted local physician to make sure you have a mouthguard for fast relief and get a thorough sleep study to see if you need further intervention.
